Grantmaker Web Sites
As foundations increasingly place their application guidelines, annual reports, and other documents online, the initial prospect identification phase of grantwriting becomes easier. Begin with meta-sites that compile links to the sites of major grantmakers. Remember, however, that the majority of grantmakers have not yet established an online presence.
Private Foundations on the Web: Comprehensive annotated links to foundation web sites. Can be searched by subject, location, or alphabetical order. Similar list for corporate philanthropy.

Corporate Philanthropy on the Web: Comprehensive annotated links to corporate giving web sites. Can be searched by subject, location, or alphabetical order.

Philanthropy Trends and Giving Patterns
Grantwriters should pay attention to articles about trends in philanthropy, foundation giving patterns, and the nonprofit sector in general. The archives of online publications often have search capabilities. You can find interviews with foundation officers, announcements of new grant programs, and examples of funded projects.
The Chronicle of Philanthropy is the leading fundraising newspaper with a current subscription rate of  $67 annually.  Some resources are available for free from the web site, but most only content requires a subscription password.  If you lack web access, write to The Chronicle of Philanthropy, 1255 23rd Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20037

Pulse: online newsletter of the Nonprofit Management Support Community.  Provides email version and archived copies with grant announcements and other nonprofit resources.

Prospect Research
Mainstream newspapers and press releases from nonprofit organizations often provide insight into the funding priorities of targeted prospects, with far more detail than you might find in typical lists of grant recipients. In addition to investigating the grantmaking guidelines of foundations and corporations as institutions, grantwriters often research biographical information about the original benefactor, foundation trustees, program officers, and corporate executives.
PhilanthropySearch.com is a search engine designed specifically for the nonprofit sector. Irrelevant information is screened out, so you only find information about charitable giving and philanthropic issues.

Local Media Resources: For obscure family foundations that lack web sites, try the online edition of the local newspaper from the town where the foundation is based to learn about the donor. Try this mega-list of links to domestic and international newspapers
       http://www.kidon.com/media-link/usa.shtml
Specialty Engines: Also began collecting bookmarked links search engines and mega-lists specific to your charitable purpose. For example, while researching foundations that fund universities, I use the SearchEdu web site to find press releases and project descriptions about philanthropic gifts received by universities.

Print Resources
Directories:  If your organization can afford to invest in reference material, the Foundation Center directly sells grantmaker directories, regional directories, specific funding directories, online databases, CD-ROM databases, fax-on-demand foundation profiles, and books on the nonprofit sector. Check the public library or nearest university library first so see whether publications are locally available.
